What
is Naturopathy? - Val Allen explains:
Natural
Therapy, or Naturopathy, aims to treat each patient as a whole person
and endeavours to help each person attain a high level of energy
and wellness physically, mentally and emotionally.
During
a consultation, a naturopath will discuss the patient's health history
including any surgical procedures undertaken and present and past
medication, as well as listening carefully to the symptom picture
described by the patient. Observation of the patient will also reveal
health clues - skin, hair, fingernails, tongue, iris, walking gait,
dark circles beneath the eyes etc combine to aid the practitioner
in assessing any underlying causes of poor health.
It
is not uncommon for a patient to attend a naturopath because they
feel tired or experience poor work performance rather than for a
specific disease state. Sometimes lethargy, skin problems, digestive
problems or inflammatory conditions are the result of poor diet,
food sensitivities or emotional states and these are addressed.
Sometimes, skeletal or soft tissue problems complicate health problems
and these would be addressed separately.
There
are various aids used by practitioners to help in their understanding
and assessment of each case. Iridology
can provide insight from the colour, texture and nerve tissue markings
revealed in the iris and sclera of the eye; a Quantum
reading can detail disturbances to the body's normal function; a
Hemaview picture of a blood sample
can reveal abnormalities of blood tissue and the presence of undesirable
elements such as microbial activity or toxicity and a Bio-Impedance
Analysis can provide insight into the body's biological age
and the vitality of muscle and cellular activity. A homoeopathic
study is valuable also.
Each
naturopath at PNMC is fully trained in nutrition, herbal medicine
and homoeopathy and some also practise Traditional Chinese Medicine
and acupuncture. The main focus is on optimising diet to improve
health and our skilled practitioners will select an appropriate
regime of herbal, homoeopathic or nutritional supplements to correct
health problems and improve vitality where appropriate.
All
of our naturopaths are accredited by the Australian Natural Therapists
Accreditation Board and are registered by the Federal Government's
Therapeutic Goods Administration, which allows them to prescribe
high-potency therapeutic nutritional supplements designed to correct
health problems as opposed to relatively low dosage nutritional
supplements which are available over the counter. This ensures patients
receive effective and cost-effective treatment.
Whether
the patient is a young child, an active sportsperson, a busy mum,
an overworked executive, a pregnant lady or an elderly frail patient
appropriate help is available to improve the energy and health quality
for each special patient.
Naturopathic
consultations are covered by most major health
funds.
