Cancer – Getting to know the beast – Part 1

By Edward Enever – Naturopath | Chronic disease and Cancer Coach/Mentor

In warfare, to defeat the enemy it is important to know who you are dealing with – this is where insideinformation, or intel, comes in handy. In the ‘war on cancer’ would it useful to know some of the enemy’s weaknesses so as to exploit these weaknesses to ensure the best outcome? Yes it would. In this article we will explore some of the inherent weaknesses of the cancer cell supported by scientific research. Along with the fear that naturally comes with a diagnosis of cancer is an image of an almighty, undefeatable disease that cannot be beaten in most cases, yet, cancer also has a fragile, delicate side that not many people are familiar with. This soft side has a huge potential to be the ‘Achilles Heel’ of the condition and by taking full advantage of these weaknesses, enhancing and exploiting them before applying specific, targeted therapies, we can ensure the best health outcome for the patient.

There are in fact many weaknesses of the cancer cell that can be therapeutically exploited for your benefit – too many for this article, so today I will cover two very important ones and in the newsletters to come I will explore the rest. So, to the important stuff – two very important weakness of the cancer cell include:

The cancer cells mitochondria are highly dysfunctional.
The mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. In cancer cells the mitochondria are highly dysfunctional leading to poor energy (ATP) production and high levels of oxidative stress making the DNA in the mitochondria around 100 times more susceptible to damage than DNA contained within the nucleus of the cell. Can this be used to our advantage. YES. The cancer cell is already under a huge oxidant load.  Imagine it’s already perched on a ledge of oxidation and very close to cell death already – it just needs a push over the edge to finish it off. By weakening the cancer cells antioxidant defences and increasing the oxidant load, apoptosis (programed cell death) is promoted.

The cancer cell is dependent on the amino acid methionine

Methionine is an amino acid. Amino acids make up proteins. Methionine is a very special aminoacid in the case of cancer as cancer cells have a dependence on it – without dietary methionine, the cancer cell will starve – methionine is essential to its survival. Normal, non-cancerous cells when deprived of methionine have the ability to recycle another compound called homocysteine to form the methionine it needs for survival. Cancer cells completely lack the enzymes that allow this to take place. The dependence cancer cells have on methionine has been known since the 80s yet little research and interest has come out of the ‘cancer research camp’ about this important characteristic. By depleting methionine using a specially formulated therapeutic diet, a range of therapeutic effects occur in the cancer cell. These include sensitizing it to oxidative therapies like chemotherapy, radiation and natural oxidants such as ones I may recommend on the NORI Protocol. Methionine depletion also promotes what’s called G2 cell cycle arrest of the cancer cell. Cell cycle arrest is sort of like a pause mode in the lifecycle of the cancer cell – it means it halts growth and can halt progression of cell division. In my approach to cancer we cycle a methionine restricted diet with periods of methionine repletion (normal diet) which has been shown to induce this cell cycle arrest, then, when refeeding the methionine back into the diet, we push the cancer cell out of arrest and accelerate it into apoptosis (programed cell death of the cancer cell). This approach leverages the powerful effect of the diet and combines it with certain oxidative therapies to push the cancer cells ‘over the edge’ helping patients achieve the best health outcome possible.

When cancer strikes a common approach is to ‘throw everything at it’ – because you know…. its cancer!Unfortunately this ‘shotgun’ approach is not the wisest decision. In clinical practice many cancer patients come to me sporting a very comprehensive list of herbs, vitamins, minerals, compounds and all sorts of things that they believe are doing them some good to defeat the dreaded beast. When you are diagnosed with cancer it seems everyone knows someone who has used this ‘special product’ and it cured them. “Uncle Jacks best mates uncle used this special leaf off a tree a guy in a market sold to him and it worked for him – you need this too, I’ll get you some…” Before too long you have a comprehensive arsenal that is sure to work… Unfortunately in most cases it does not.

In supporting someone with cancer, a highly specific, evidence based, targeted approach, such as the NORI Protocol, is highly recommended for the best outcome. Many compounds have the ability to interact with other compounds and you need to know what you are taking, why you are taking it, the action you want from it and if it will negate anything else you are already on. If someone who recommends a product to you can’t answer these questions in detail then it is unwise to take it. Cancer can make you become desperate – I know, I’ve been there. When faced with the C word it’s important to pick your therapies wisely, pin your ears back and GO FOR IT.
Always remember – Miraculous outcomes do happen, and it only takes one person to do it to prove that it is possible…
