Osteopathy

Treating muscular & skeletal problems

About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a holistic, manual therapy that focuses on correcting joint malfunction. Commonly thought to only treat the spine, osteopathy looks at function of joints in the whole-body, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Osteopathy uses massage and other physical manipulations of muscle tissue and bones to treat a range of medical disorders. It aims to assist the body to gain normal pain-free movement and function.

An osteopathy degree takes five years to complete, and practitioners must be registered by law with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency and treatments are covered by most health funds.

Muscular & Joint Function

Osteopaths focus on the health of the entire body, rather than just the injured or affected part. They look at how your skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulatory system, connective tissue and internal organs function as a whole body unit.

In accordance with osteopathic principles, treatments are tailored to each individual, with safety being the prime consideration. And practitioners will generally explain the type of technique to be used, before commencing treatment.

Osteopaths often offer advice on self-help measures and lifetime issues such as diet, posture, stress management and exercise to assist with the treatments they offer. They will also refer patients to other health care practitioners when necessary.

Osteopathic treatments are mostly gentle and painless; however, it is not uncommon to feel tender for a couple of days following a treatment.
