Supporting Healthy Sperm Production and Quality

With studies showing that one in 35 Australian men will be affected by fertility issues, it’s important that we address not only the woman’s health but also the man’s health when supporting couples to conceive a child.

Practical things Men can do to Improve Fertility

Healthy sperm production and high quality sperm are factors indicating a man’s fertility. Here are some practical, everyday habits that can support your fertility as a man:

  • Drink plenty of water during the day to stay hydrated
  • Wear loose fitting underwear and pants
  • Keep electronic devices away from the pelvis
  • Eat the optimal amount of high quality protein daily
  • Include a variety of seasonal vegetables and fruits in your diet
  • Exercise 5-6 times per week

What are the Factors Contributing to Fertility for Men?

Your overall fitness and health are obviously factors that will contribute to your fertility, so if you have any weight concerns or are dealing with other medical conditions, it’s critical to address these issues with an  integrative GP and get additional support from your Naturopath  where suitable.

It’s also important to look at how much alcohol you may be drinking. Even 5 standard drinks a week can result in a decrease in sperm quality and content. Of course, drugs and smoking cigarettes or marijuana will also negatively impact sperm production and quality so if these are part of your current lifestyle, and you’re planning to conceive, it’s important to consider making some changes in order to improve your success in conceiving.

How can seeing a Naturopath Help with Male Fertility?

When you see a Naturopath for preconception support, we will look at your diet and possibly get some blood tests taken to check levels of specific nutrients that are critical for sperm production and healthy sperm.

The minerals Zinc, CoQ10, and vitamins A, C, E, as well as selenium are all beneficial for a man’s fertility but where stress or other diet and lifestyle factors are contributing to low sperm count, there may be specific supplements and herbal medicines that will support your unique needs. This is where working with an integrative GP and Naturopath is beneficial to get more support to improve your health and fertility on your journey to parenthood.

You may not know however that our skin is home to a complex and dynamic community of microorganisms that is referred to as the skin microbiome. This ecosystem plays a huge role in maintaining skin health, protecting against pathogens, and in our immune responses.
